Knowing Jee:
Imaginative Artistry in a Competitive Industry

In the design industry, it’s an advantage—or even a necessity—to have a team of creative and artistic individuals. In fact, many consider this collective of imaginative artists as the “soul” of a web or graphic design company. Their talent, skill, and enthusiasm usually stem from an innate passion for art.

Jee, a quiet and simple lady in the Vectto team, is an artist at heart. She shares her passion and her love of art with everyone she meets, and here at Vectto, this is no exception.

1. Can you tell us more about yourself?

I’m Jee, and I’m 25 years old. Since I was a child, people have always thought I am “different.” I guess it comes from having an innate creative streak in me. It’s no surprise that I am extremely passionate about art. I even took up Fine Arts as a course in college.

I am an avid and driven artist. Painting is my forte, but I also like free hand sketching and digital art. My interest in art made me decide to have a career as an illustrator.

2. Can you explain your role at Vectto?

I am an illustrator, and I make icons for Vectto. This role is important because our team makes the main products of the company. Using Adobe Illustrator, we create both simple and complex icons in different styles. I like this position because it allows me to earn a living and learn new skills while being given the opportunity to do what I truly enjoy doing.

Being a digital illustrator opens a door for me to explore and learn art in another perspective considering that I’m more of a traditional artist.

3. What was your favorite Vectto experience?

When we launched our own Vectto website, it was an exhilarating moment for me. You see, I used to design outline icons only. When the site was launched, Kristian (Vectto CEO) announced that more glyph, flat, colored, and two-toned icons will be added to the library. This was truly exciting because the introduction of more icon styles meant that Vectto is making significant steps to move forward.

Obviously, there was lots of preparation and organizing involved. However, it was all worth it because we learned a whole world of new things.

4. What are the daily challenges that you face in your work?

For me, it has always been about balance. Being able to balance productivity and creating quality icons at the same time. There is usually a trade-off between quantity and quality. I’m still trying to find my pace to minimize the margin of that trade-off.

My teammates, specifically Ryan and JD, showed me shortcut keys and taught me techniques so I could design icons in an easier, faster, and more efficient way.

5. What is the best thing about your work?

This job gives me the opportunity to be creative. Making illustrations is something that I love doing. I feel immensely satisfied and proud to see the icons I made displayed and sold on our website. It’s not an exaggeration to say that being an illustrator gives meaning and purpose to my passion.

6. What are your personal and professional goals?

Personally, I would like to be recognized as a professional artist. Perhaps have my own exhibit or have my work displayed in an art gallery. Art is a medium to express myself, my ideas, and visions that cannot be articulated in words. I see myself pursuing this passion for the rest of my life.

Professionally, I want to be a director and lead a team of talented illustrators and designers. Just like many passionate people, I like to teach and share my knowledge about the different aspect of art. I still have a long way, but I’ll definitely get there.

7. Has working at Vectto brought you closer to your goals?

Vectto helped me become a better artist and employee. I learned to communicate better with my fellow illustrators. My teammates taught me to be more responsible; as a result, they give me tasks that they know I can handle for myself. The sense of leadership and responsibility that I have learned from them made me confident that I will reach my goals someday.

8. What can you say about Vectto’s working environment?

Vectto is a fast-growing company. This is the best company I’ve been in so far in my 3 years of employment. The company allows me to thrive, improve, use, and earn through my passion. As such, it doesn’t seem like work. In fact, working here is enjoyable and comforting.

9. What does "flourishing" mean to you?

Flourishing means to work hard towards success and to enjoy the journey. Grow and prosper as an individual because you’re a canvas of your own experiences.

10. What do you do during your free time?

I create original paintings, focusing on the art style of surrealism. I use oil, acrylic paints, and watercolor as media.

I’m also a licensed free diver, so I rush out to sea and dive on weekends. If I’m not painting or free diving, I play computer games such as DoTA 2, Starcraft 2, Counter Strike, and more.

11. Any parting words to aspiring illustrators and graphic artists out there?

Take ownership of your work. That is your responsibility and you have to embrace it with eagerness. Do it because you want to, not because you’re paid to. Always pursue the things you love doing with passion and hard work.

With her creativity, passion and positive attitude, Jee is a perfect fit for the Vectto team. As she develops her skill and indulges deeper in her passion for art, Jee will help Vectto gain in new, exciting directions. Way to go, Jee!
